INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES

This project will ensure Port Saint John can effectively meet the demands of the growing container sector.

International shippers are investing in larger and larger vessels, and export volumes around the world are accelerating. This first phase of our terminal upgrade, which will be complete in 2023, will more than double our capacity – allowing us to welcome larger vessels and accelerate our throughput with best-in-class cargo handling capabilities.

In short, this project will not just maintain but strengthen our position as a major port in the Atlantic Gateway.

The Modernize project at Port Saint John is funded in partnership with the Government of Canada, and the Province of New Brunswick with a total investment amount of $205M. Additionally, there are several private sector investments made, which complement the project.

The seven-year Modernization project is anticipated to be complete in 2023. By that time it will have generated more than 1,000 person-years of direct and indirect jobs.

The resulting growth in container cargo handled at Port Saint John is expected to double direct and indirect jobs in this sector and create hundreds of local jobs over time.

As a key driver of our province’s GDP, Port Saint John’s growth strategy is a high-priority item for our economy.

Setting the table for the investments driving the Modernization project are:

• Our terminal operator partnership with DP World, which connects us to more than 500 ports worldwide.

• Our rail optionality with CP and CN Rail, which became an important differentiator for our port.

These differentiators are driving demand:

• In the last ten years, we have attracted some of the world’s top container shipping lines, including Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), CMA CGM, and most recently, Hapag-Lloyd.

• Our container traffic continues to grow year over year with demand on the rise.

The Modernization project will raise the bar, allowing us to realize more of our growth potential.

As larger ports become more congested, international shippers look for alternative port options that have capacity and capability to cost-effectively get their cargo to market. With our upgraded facilities, our strong partnerships, and our rail optionality, Port Saint John is positioned to be an ideal solution.

There are two important notes to make with respect to accelerating our future growth potential:

• Future phases of the Modernization project are anticipated, which could more than double our capacity again, ensuring we keep pace with growth potential over the long term.

• With the announcement of the new J.D. Irving Lancaster Logistics Park, we are also seeing early signs of the formation of a logistics cluster that has the potential to further enhance the value proposition associated with Port Saint John.

From an import perspective, the growth of Port Saint John will create jobs, support local suppliers and contractors, develop clustering opportunities for related businesses, and generate increased tax revenue that will benefit both our local community and the region as a whole.

From an export perspective, the growth of Port Saint John will have a positive impact on the many thousands of New Brunswickers who work in export-related industries including petroleum, forestry, aquaculture, and others. These businesses will be able to rely on the Port for massive throughput potential, best-in-class service, as well as reliable and regular access to world markets.
